Ipsy June 2013 Review

It was clearly a good month for subscription boxes. Not only was my Birchbox a big winner, my Ipsy bag this month knocked it out of the park as well. After a series of disappointing Ipsy bags, it was a breath of fresh air to get some products I'll actually use.

Even more shocking: for the first time since I joined Ipsy, the bag is actually pretty freaking cute. I've always had a soft spot for leopard print. The bag contained:

Starlooks Lip Pencil in Tipsy (2.4g/0.08oz), retail value $12.00pss

This lip pencil is sort of neon, flamingo-y coral color. It is bright and fun and summery. The pencil is very soft and blendable and it is highly pigmented. Even better, it works well as either a lip liner or as a lip color (although a bit of chapstick will help it keep your lips moisturized when you wear it).

I think that Starlooks was very smart to partner with Ipsy this month. They have their own subscription box, Starbox, that sends out Starlooks products only. Since I had never tried their products, and thus could not speak to the quality, I had never been tempted before. However, if this is representative of their makeup line, the $15 a month for the Starbox is a steal. I will definitely be researching and considering this subscription box.

Chella Ivory Lace Highlighter (1.4g/0.05oz), retail value $18.00

This highlighting pencil is the perfect product to put under your eyebrows. It is very soft and it's a great color for my skin. Is it actually worth $18? Probably not. But while I have it, I will definitely use it.

Psssst! Instant Dry Shampoo (1.76oz), retail value $3.50

I am not sure that there is anything genuinely special about this product, but it is very inexpensive. If you're looking for a good price on an aerosol dry shampoo, this one will likely have you covered.

Before and after Pssst! Dry Shampoo
J Cat Sparkling Cream Palette in Suzie (0.1oz), retail value $4.49

Okay, so this was the big controversial piece of this bag because people were (validly) worried about safety. The J Cat website states, "This product should be used with caution and attentive application around the eye area and on the body." How much do you need to be concerned? Probably not too much. Glitter is not an FDA-approved color additive, which is probably the reason that this warning appears. I put this on my eyes and I have yet to go blind. My corneas remain unscathed. If you do choose to use this on your eyes, obviously be careful, but I speculate that you will be okay.

That being said, is this a good product? FUCK NO. Indeed, when I first saw this. I thought, "Wow that looks exactly like the NYX Glitter Cream Palette", which I frequently refer to as the worst piece of makeup that I have ever purchased.

My swatches validated this comparison. This is weird, sticky glitter that has no discernible point. I think that, in general, glitter cream palettes are just kind of bad ideas.

NYX Rouge Cream Blush in Natural (0.12oz), retail value $6.00

I was super pleased to receive this blush. I have many NYX powder blushes, but I had yet to try one of their cream blushes. This is super easy to apply and you can easily build it up or keep it sheer. The color is also absolutely gorgeous.

Bonus: Baublebar O-Ring Stud Wrap Bracelet, estimated retail value $18

This product doesn't seem to be available for sale anywhere that I can find, so I estimated its retail value based on the least expensive bracelet on the Baublebar website. Ipsy has just started doing referrals, and if you refer two people, you get a bonus item.

I am not really sure how I feel about this bracelet. I don't like the hoop it has on it, but the rest is perfectly nice. It's a good change of pace from the chunky jewelry I normally lean towards, so I will count this as a win.

Total Box Value: $43.99 without counting the Baublebar bracelet, and $61.99 with it.

All the products that I received, together on one head.
Overall, I am very pleased with this bag. I don't adore every single product I received, but I couldn't possibly ask for more for $10.

If I did convince you to try out Ipsy, please feel free to use my referral link here.

  1. I was a big fan of my ipsy bag, too, but will be re-gifting the glitter. Ick.

  2. Re-gifted the glitter to a 7-year-old. I liked my bag otherwise, although the lip liner color did not work for me.

  3. You got a way better selection than I did. The NYX blush I received was copper... COPPER. Who uses a copper blush?! The lip liner was a weird brown color, and of course the glitter palette sucked hardcore. Plus I got fake lashes, I guess that's pretty cool since I've never used them before but I don't know how to apply them. The Chella pencil is amazing, I use it on my waterline.
