Review: Sumita Beauty Contrast Eye Pencil in Ziba

I originally got a black Sumita eyeliner from Birchbox in May 2013. I was really impressed with the brand's creamy texture, which reminded me of the Urban Decay 24/7 pencil liners. However, in a world of near-infinite 'pretty darn good' black pencil liners, even the softest, most pigmented black doesn't get my heart rate pumping.

Do you know what does?

Chartreuse.

The Sumita eyeliners retail for a downright-paltry $11 each. They're pretty basic, but I think the packaging looks nice, especially for the price. There's some floral-y squiggles on there. I can appreciate that. They're also not too difficult to sharpen, even though they are quite soft and smooth.

Ziba is a yellow-y green shade. I find that it swatches well, but, on my eyes, it takes a few passes to really build up intensity, especially if it is applied over heavy eyeshadow looks.

Once you get it on, though, it's not going anywhere. Pass the makeup remover, guys.

Here's how the Sumita Eye Pencil in Ziba looks on my face:

Sorry about the clumpy lashes. I was trying a lash primer and it was not a success.

The Sumita Color Contrast Eyeliners retail for a super reasonable $11 for 0.06oz, or $183.33 per ounce. For comparison, Urban Decay's 24/7 Pencil Liners retail for $20 for 0.04oz, or $500 per ounce. Given the pretty low cost and good quality, I definitely plan on trying out other Sumita products in the future.

Now I just need a liquid liner in this color...

  1. You should try out some of the Stila liquid liners - they seem to have some bright new colours for spring! Love this look.

  2. Woo! That is one gorgeous colour combo on your eyes! :-) Now I want a chartreuse eyeliner...I wonder if we can get this brand over here?

Lash primers are tricky things - I tend to find that they usually fall somewhere between 'I can't see the difference' and 'what has this done to my perfectly nice mascara?' for me, although I'm always open to trying them.

    1. I was considering doing white eyelashes for this look, but I couldn't get the lashes white enough... and it just ruined my black lashes. :(

  3. Ooooh this is so pretty.

I share your disdain for em cosmetics and their delusional price points but I am a bit curious about their pencil liners, mostly because they have some intriguing colors and because emilynoel83 said they are the only product from the line she is still using, which is a pretty good endorsement.

    1. If you do, let me know! I don't necessarily have disdain for the brand, I just can't justify making a purchase from them.

  5. Thanks for reviewing this, I bought some of Sumita's brow powder with a Birchbox gift card and loved the quality, but had a hard time finding good reviews of their other products.

    1. Almost nothing is reviewed, unfortunately! It makes it really hard to research.

  6. Daaaamn! This is a hot look and bright pencil eyeliner that doesn't budge is pretty much Holy Grail territory for me. I will have to investigate procuring this in New Zealand.

    1. Let me know if you can find it! They're a pretty small brand.

  7. Robyn, the GIF made me laugh. My ex came over for Indian takeout last night and my Chela eyeliner pen was still sitting on my kitchen counter where I'd torn apart my Ipsy. When he asked what it was, I did the same thing with it. I was way more excited than he understood, but this just reminded me of it. I might have to search this brand out if the staying power is that good.

  8. Chartreuse excites me too. Will add this to the never-ending list of things I want from the Birchbox shop. Now if only they sent cool stuff like this in the monthly boxes...

    1. Yeah, when I got the Sumita eyeliner I was so bummed that it was plain old black!

  9. I would LOVE this in a liquid liner. I know people always go nuts over the Stila ones, but I kind of hate them :/ They dry out on me in like a week and I have tried 3 different colors (black, navy and mint)

    1. I'm not in love with Stila liners either... I wish they lasted longer and were more pigmented.
